About Manipur:It is one  of the state in India , located in the north- east. It is bordered by the Indian states of Nagaland to the north, west of Assam and Mizoram in the south- west and Myanmar ( Burma ), south and east . The state capital Imphal is located in the center of the state .
Manipur name means "land of jewels. " Like other states of the northeast , it is largely isolated from the rest of India. Its economy is based on agriculture and forestry, and trade industries and handicrafts are also important. Area 8621 miles square ( 22,327 square km). Pop ( est. 2008) 2627000 .

The valley, which encompasses some 690 square miles ( 1787 square miles) , stretching from north to south and is located at an altitude of 2,600 feet ( 790 meters). Its main characteristic is physical Logtak lake, which covers about 40 square miles ( 100 square kilometers) and is the source of the Manipur River. The river flows south across the valley in Myanmar , where it joins the Myittha River, a tributary of the Chindwin .

Chains of hills, connected by spurs and ridges generally run north-south. These ranges include the Naga hills to the north , the hills of eastern Manipur along the eastern border of Myanmar, the Mizo and Chin hills to the south, and the hills of western Manipur to the west. Average altitudes vary between 5,000 and 6,000 feet ( 1,500 and 1,800 meters ), although the hills of the northern rising above 9,500 feet ( 2,900 meters ) . In the west of the Surma River , known as the Barak River in Manipur , dug a narrow collected through the hills of Manipur as it flows west to join the Meghna River in Bangladesh valley.
The climate is temperate in the valley and the cold in the hills. In summer the average maximum temperature is slightly more than 90 F (about 32-34 ° C) , while in winter temperatures can drop into the mid-30s F (about 1-2 ° C). Precipitation is abundant , with about 65 inches (1650 mm) of precipitation each year. November to February are the driest months of the state.

The hills are densely covered with mixed forests with stands of bamboo and teak. Other trees include oak , magnolia, and chinquapin . Luzon pine grows in the Naga Hills . Notable plants in the state are rhododendrons, primroses and blue poppies . Animal life includes Asian elephants , tigers , leopards and wild buffaloes . The rhino is hunted for its horn, which, when the soil is evaluated as an aphrodisiac. Deer head - antlered is in danger of extinction . The gaur is the largest wild bison in the world, mithan (or gayal ) , the domesticated form , is widespread in the state.
